Crime on the Island is cyclical. We know it increases during the summer months – the assumption is that youth are out of school and are the root of the problem. This is a community assumption, not a proven fact. After a period of relative calm on the Island we are experiencing a virtual explosion of burglaries in the tiny residential areas – see below. As is often the case, we rarely see patrol cars in the residential areas where the crimes occur. When a spike in crimes is occurring we are not receiving warning notices until the month after. The 4th of July is right around the corner. The sub-station has been instructed to answer the phone and to dispatch police when a resident calls in a fireworks violation – please take advantage of the opportunity to help spread the word that it is not open season on peaceful Island residents. In the meantime, it is rumored that the burglars, who most likely live amongst us, watch to see when residents leave their homes. Please, get to know your neighbors and report any an all suspicious activities. We spoke with Sgt. Gallegos who has indicated he has extra officers on the Island looking to resolve this latest spike in crime. Comments (1) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 28 | E-mail | Read more... |

Happy 4th of July The celebration of our nation’s independence and the inauguration of taxation WITH representation is a milestone in human history, imperfect as it may have been over the years. The promise of equal protection and rights under the law for all is still unfolding and needs to be ever pressed. It is this authors humble opinion that the best way to celebrate the promise of our civilization it to push forward for the inclusion of all citizens AND to promote the rule of law. At the same time, explosion of fireworks on the Islands do not support this. They are fun and many of us have fond memories of fireworks from our childhoods, but they are dangerous and disturbe the peace. The city and county of San Francisco had determined that personal fireworks display are both dangerious, disruptive, and illegal. Click Read More to continue... For the past three weeks residents have been complaining about youth on (illegal) pocket bikes and gas powered scooters driving up and down Gateview Ave. disturbing the peace. This is not a new problem Residents have been reporting this for the past two or three years and the police, when they show up, do not cite nor do the impound the vehicles. Tonight pocket bikes and scooters have been annoying residents at Gateview Ave. and Gateview Court for the past several hours. The police were called by multiple residents to report the problem, however there was no timely response. One of the problems is that the youth have look outs to report when “50” is coming One resident was walking past these youth and was challenged as to what he was doing there. This is not an isolated incident. Where are their parents? The kids are out every night, driving in the middle of the street, annoying other residents and posing a safety risk. If you look at the crime map provided on this site you can easily see that Bayside, Northpoint and Gateview court have more than their share of problems, yet, getting a firm response seems impossible. If you have a complaint about the pocket bikes/scooters, please call the non emergency line at 553-0123. If you know where youth live please call your housing provider and report them, as well as the anonymous tip line at 552-4901. Don’t rely on others to take care of this problem -- If you don’t do something about it who will? Crimes that occur on Treasure Island/Yerba Buena Island do not show up on the SFPD online crime map. I am not sure why this is - it may have to do with our street numbering and the fact that the Islands still belong to the navy, but out of frustration I put a request for help in developing a crime map for the Islands on the web.
Within the month, Colin Drane of http://www.spotcrime.com/ responded with an offer to help us. Not only did his agency do all the work, but they are located in Baltimore! I had a chance to meet Colin and his lovely wife and newborn a few months ago when they attended a web conference in San Francisco.
TreasureIslandOnline.net:: Colin, tell us about SpotCrime.com, why are you developing this service on the Internet? Colin: SpotCrime.com is a crime mapping service free to the public. We pull data from police sources and news reports and map them using a googlemash-up interface. I originally developed it to see where the crime was occurring in my city, Baltimore. Once we created a proof of concept, Spotcrime.com was born. Our objective is to create a reliable crime mapping source for everyone. We intend to be completely self sustaining thereby not using any taxpayer dollars for our service. This year a coalition of Good Neighbors of TI/YBI, Catholic Charities, TIDA and John Stewart Company are making a coordinated effort to help mitigate the problem. Students from the Job Corps program and members of the Coast Guard on the island recently invited island residents and those who work here to meet them on the field for some friendly competition. This is just for fun and it doesn't matter if you know how to play or not, we will learn together! Challenge softball games are a great way to break the ice between groups that normally don't have a chance to mix and are good for building community spirit. If you are interested in joining or coaching an island team, please use the form below to get on the list.
